With access to previously unpublished information, the author tells the story of the founder of the world-famous luxury French luggage and travel goods company, Louis Vuitton
This lively biography narrates the story of Louis Vuitton (1821-1892), who, at the age of 14, set out on foot for Paris from his native village in the Jura mountains and ultimately became one of the most successful manufacturers of luggage and leather goods in the world. Arriving in the metropolis at age 16, he was taken on as an apprentice at the atelier of Monsieur Marechal, where expert packers and talented custom box and luggage makers catered to a wealthy clientele. He perfected his craft there, becoming the personal packer and luggage maker for the Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III. In 1854 he opened his own atelier, and with access to the highest levels of society and a gift for innovation and design, he was on his way to an illustrious career. This book, full of previously unpublished information, reveals the story behind the man and the legendary luxury goods empire he founded.
A sweeping overview of Charlotte Perriands career, exploring the interrelation of art, architecture, and design in the work of this legendary 20th century modernist
Includes essays by her daughter, Pernette Perriand, and by Jacques Barsac, author of the Charlotte Perriand Catalogue Raisonne
Accompanies a landmark exhibition at the Louis Vuitton Foundation from 2 October, 2019 to 24 February, 2020 on the 20th anniversary of Perriands death
Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) was a pioneer of modern design in France during the twentieth century. Her avant-garde vision was expressed in color, organic forms, and streamlined functionality, elements which are still at the heart of contemporary design today. Her furnishings were created from aluminum, rubber, chrome, leather, bamboo, and above all, wood; their appeal is timeless. This lavishly illustrated book, accompanying a major retrospective at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, explores how much in the vanguard she was in her use of materials, in her social and political awareness, and in her collaborations with artists, architects, and other designers. The show presents a global vision of her creativity, talent, and inventiveness, exploring her commitment to women and to a humanist design ethos that took into account the middle and working classes with an emphasis on rationalizing costs and space. This book, with essays by an international roster of art, architecture, and design historians, offers a plurality of perspectives and explores Perriands creative legacy through the 20th century and beyond.
Accompanies a major double exhibition on Jean-Michel Basquiat and Egon Schiele — two artists that died too young but created masses of work over the course of a decade — at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, from 3rd October 2018 to 4th January 2019
Comprises drawings, objects and paintings, gathered from private collections and museums all over the world
In 2018 the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, is hosting exhibitons on two of the greatest artists of the 20th century — Egon Schiele, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Both exhibitions have the same curator, and are taking place at the same time. The shows illustrate exactly what it is that linked the two artists: line, and the use of expressive force.
This, the catalog of the Basquiat exhibition, labelled «the definitive exhibition» by its curator, brings together 120 of the artists most important masterpieces, sourced from interational museums and private collections. With the astonishing radicalness of his artistic practice, Basquiat renewed the concept of art with enduring impact. This Basquiat retrospective centres on the idea of Basquiats unique energetic line, his use of words, symbols, and how he integrates collage in his paintings, sculptures, objects, and large-scale drawings.
The catalog includes texts by great authors, including Paul Schimmel who tells of his meeting with Basquiat in California; Francesco Pellizzi who knew Basquiat well and has not written about him for a long time; and Okwui Enwezor who talks about the Afro American identity.
The second installment of Icons of Modern Art, the major exhibition organized by Fondation Louis Vuitton, brings together more than 170 unparalleled masterpieces from the collection of modern French and Russian art created by the Muscovite brothers Mikhail and Ivan Morozov.
Following the exhibition of the collection of Sergei Shchukin, Fondation Louis Vuitton continues its exploration of the cultural and intellectual world of Russias collectors and patrons, pioneers of modern art. Presented for the fi rst time outside Russia, the Morozov collection includes iconic works by Manet, Rodin, Monet, Pissarro, Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, Sisley, Cйzanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Bonnard, Denis, Maillol, Matisse, Marquet, Vlaminck, Derain, and Picasso, alongside works of celebrated Russian artists from the turn of the twentieth century, such as Repin, Vrubel, Korovin, Golovin, Serov, Larionov, Goncharova, Malevich, Mashkov, Konchalovsky, Utkin, Saryan, and Konenkov. The unprecedented presentation of work by these artists represents an exceptional opportunity for discovering them anew.
The philanthropic brothers Mikhail Abramovich Morozov (1870-1903) and Ivan Abramovich Morozov (1871-1921) dominated Moscows cultural life from the end of the nineteenth century until the early twentieth century, along with the Tretyakov, Mamontov, Ryabushinsky, and Shchukin families. Their unconditional support of European and Russian contemporary art was integral to the international recognition of modern French painters.
